Professor Monique Dorang
Professor Monique Dorang comes from an American and French cultural background and is a native speaker of both English and French. Her intercultural competence makes her particularly qualified to respond to the needs of an international workshop audience.
Nowadays, English is the lingua franca of the scientific community and Monique Dorang’s workshops on academic writing and publishing are enlightened by the awareness of what it means to be “writing across cultures”.
Monique Dorang studied in the field of Humanities. After writing her doctoral thesis at the Freie Universität Berlin, she worked as a translator for the German Institute for Standardization (DIN). And, ever since, she has collaborated with the fields of Natural Sciences and Engineering.
In 1997, she was appointed as tenure-track Professor for English and French to the School of Technology of the Mainz University of Applied Sciences. In 2006, she went on to teach as an Instructor of English for Science and Engineering at the Berlin Institute of Technology.
Today, as a certified free-lance Trainer and Consultant for Academic Writing and Publishing, Monique Dorang conducts workshops for graduates and research supervisors in collaboration with graduate schools, staff development programs, research centers , and foundations. Her workshops are writing process oriented and frequently address interdisciplinary audiences, either from the fields of Natural Sciences and Engineering or from the fields of Humanities, Social and Political Sciences.
She is a member of the European Association for the Teaching of Academic Writing and of the International Society for the Advancement of Writing Research.
Her current research focuses on the learning strategies of junior researchers writing in English outside of the Anglophone context. As a guest speaker at conferences, she holds talks on the didactics of writing with a special focus on STEM graduates.
